Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia

Position Overview:
Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on environmental education and restoration of native ecosystems in central Appalachia. Some of our programs include Camp
Waldo summer camp and the Appalachian Beekeeping Collective.

This position will help support expanding our community programs. Appalachian Headwaters works with a wide range of groups and experts to help bring environmental education programming to people in our region. Our programs equip participants to develop a deeper
understanding of the natural world and take action to improve our environment.

The Community Programs Coordinator will help us as we grow and develop our summer programs. This will include, for example, a summer internship program for high school and college students. This position will also support Headwaters’ Ecology Fellows program, which brings college professors to the area for 10 weeks during the summer to lead community science research programs, work with interns, and put on educational events for people in our
region. This new staff person will also likely support Headwaters staff in our own community science and youth camp programs as well.

The Community Programs Coordinator will primarily work out of our locations in Greenbrier County. We have offices in a house in downtown Lewisburg, and are developing an environmental education center in 6 miles west of Lewisburg. This 100-acre property will have a large, eco-friendly education building (currently under construction), a greenhouse, shadehouse, as well as trails through pollinator gardens, meadows, and forests. We also have a
nearly 100-acre summer camp facility in Summers County, on the Big Bend of the Greenbrier River.

The Community Programs Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating with outside groups to put on programs
  • Helping support current staff in recruiting and working with high school and college
    interns
  • Working with Ecology Fellows to coordinate summer programming
  • Supporting some of Headwaters’ own community education programs
  • Implementing other activities that fit the staff’s talents and organizational needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Organized
  • Comfortable working with a broad public
  • Comfortable working outdoors
  • Interest in and knowledge of our region’s environment a plus
  • Compatible with our program mission, including a dedication to environmental protection.

Compensation: Competitive full-time salaried position with excellent benefits including up to 10% retirement match and fully paid medical insurance. Willing to consider the right candidate
