Employee will be assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management (DWWM), WQSAS Monitoring Unit.

Under close supervision, employee will perform entry level professional work and assist higher level specialists and
analysts in support of the Watershed Assessment Section in both office and field settings.

Field Duties:

  • Collect data on the physical and chemical properties of water in streams and lakes
  • Assess riparian and in-stream habitat conditions
  • Evaluate watershed activities and disturbances
  • Collect samples of benthic macroinvertebrate and fish communities
  • Conduct field reconnaissance to identify potential sampling and assessment locations
  • Perform pollutant source tracking
  • Provide environmental public education to schools, watershed groups, and other requesting entities

Office Duties:

  • Review, quality-check (QA/QC), and enter stream and lake assessment data
  • Assist senior staff with data analysis and report preparation
  • Work with GIS systems to support assessments and reporting
  • Summarize environmental data for internal and external use
  • Scan and organize assessment documents
  • Create tables, figures, and other graphical outputs for reports
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with personal computers, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  • Experience with ArcGIS applications and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret topographic maps
  • Physical ability to carry up to 30 pounds of equipment over varied terrain, including stream crossings, in all
    seasons and weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle in rugged terrain
  • Experience trailering and operating small boats preferred
  • Extensive monthly travel required, including overnight travel up to four nights per week

  • Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.
  • Qualifying applicants will be required to complete an internet-based profile assessment to compare the applicant’s
    thinking and reasoning skills, behavioral traits and the occupational interests against the traits determined to be
    important to the posted position.
  • The recommended candidate will be subject to a search of his or her Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) prior to being
    hired and annually thereafter.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

OR

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid technical or paraprofessional experience in the acquisition,
preservation, protection and enhancement of environmental/natural resources may be substituted for the required
training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.

Promotional Only: Two (2) years as an Environmental Resources Associate may substitute for the required training.

Note: At the appointing agency’s discretion, competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending
official verification of the qualifying training or certification. The qualifying training or certification must be verified before
the employee may be certified permanent.
