Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center

POSITION:

The Executive Director, as chief staff person of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center
(hereinafter KAPAC), is responsible for the administration of the theatre and ensures that
all work is produced and presented with high quality production values, results and in the
best possible circumstances. The Executive Director shall create an atmosphere conducive
to encouragement of community support.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develops and schedules new in-house programming to engage untapped audiences
  2. Works with the Marshall Artists Series and other outside producers of talent to
    schedule shows as approved by the KAPAC Board President
  3. Assesses when to produce KAPAC events or rent out theatre venue space based on
    KAPAC goals, budget, and local arts scene, evaluation of KAPAC’s upfront
    investment vs. a consistent income stream as well as whether producing events
    offers greater artistic control and community impact vs. higher risk and operational
    complexity
  4. Negotiates contracts for performances/events
  5. Supervises the live event production and staff for in-house shows
  6. Works with the KAPAC’s contractor for marketing and promotion of events
  7. Coordinates, with the Director of Building Operations, artists’ load in and strike,
    housing and hospitality
  8. With the KAPAC Board President and Finance Committee, develops an annual
    programming budget including artist fees, event expenses and equipment
  9. Reports to the President of the KAPAC Board, and when requested, the Board of
    Directors to give an update on programming activity
  10. Communicates clear expectations of job responsibilities for all staff and contract
    employees
  11. Supervises and schedules volunteers as needed
  12. Responsible for paying KAPAC invoices in concert with the President of the
    Board and the contracted CPA firm
  13. Oversees selection of and use of vendors, office equipment, and materials
  14. Ensures responsible use of funds by organization in a fiduciary capacity
  15. Creates and maintains relations with appropriate local, regional, state, and national
    government officials and arts service organizations
  16. In concert with the Board President and the Director of Development, is
    responsible for acting as the public speaker at KAPAC events and to arts and civic
    groups for the purpose of explaining the objectives, functions, and programs of the
    organization
  17. With the support and guidance of the Board of Directors, responsible for the hiring
    and firing of all staff of the KAPAC
  18. Working with the Director of Building Operations, responsible for responding to
    mishaps that arise outside the normal business hours of the KAPAC (burglar alarm
    activation, problems that arise during rentals, etc.)
  19. Responsible for studying, suggesting, planning, initiating, coordinating, and
    implementing KAPAC policies, projects, programs, and long- range plans as they
    are approved by the Board of Directors and/or appropriate committees
  20. Responsible for maintaining the budget limitations set by the Board of Directors
    and shall report the financial standing of the KAPAC to the Board President
    monthly
  21. Provides information and assists the Director of Development with grant
    applications to the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History,
    foundations, and other private or public grant-making agencies for general
    operations, programs, exhibitions, and performances
  22. Responsible for assisting the Board of Directors and the Director of Development
    with fundraising efforts
  23. Maintains a professional and courteous manner at all times
  24. Performs other related duties, as requested or assigned

The President of the KAPAC Board

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must embrace the mission of the KAPAC
  • Must have the ability to interact effectively and professionally with KAPAC Board
    Members, the Director of Development, the Director of Building Operations, and the
    Associate Director of Development, volunteers, funding source representatives, community
    leaders, the media, and other individuals who come from diverse backgrounds
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume and set a positive example
    for the KAPAC staff
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs
  • Must have the ability to understand and execute complex instructions
  • Must possess knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly major gift
    fund raising
  • Must possess research experience, using both written and electronic means
  • Must possess or quickly develop a working familiarity with major production
    equipment: movie projector, mixing board, light board etc.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Must be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
  • Must have strong organizational skills to prioritize projects and focus on details

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. An earned bachelor’s degree in arts administration, business administration, public
    relations, marketing, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Experience in administrative and/or supervisory fields.
  3. Knowledge of the fine arts as to programming and scheduling of cultural instruction
    and events.
  4. Alternatives to the above qualifications that the KAPAC Board of Directors
    finds appropriate and acceptable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen, including but
    not limited to social security verification, education verification, national criminal
    background checks and other categories relating to the position
  • Must have a valid driver’s license from the State in which employee resides
  • Must have and maintain a safe driving record

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in both an office and theatre setting.
Normally, within the office setting, there are no extremes in temperature, and the noise level in the
work environment is moderately quiet. The person will need to operate office equipment requiring
repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard and to
verbally communicate to exchange information.

In the actual physical theatre, lighting includes artificial and natural light. The person may need to
stand or sit for prolonged periods of times, to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and
twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to heavy amounts of weight. The position also involves
some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions; for
example, exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises; variance in
temperatures, moisture and/or humidity; occasionally works around loud noise levels.

Travel outside the office/physical theatre is required for calling on donors with the Director of
Development, making public appearances or speaking engagements, or attending conferences,
trainings, or meetings, as the need arises.

The employee may be required to work or meet in the evenings, nights, and/or on weekends.

SALARY/BENEFITS:
Range of $75,000 to $85,000 – commensurate with experience and other qualifications

Monday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm
Some evenings or weekends may be necessary for special events.
