Marketing & Communications Intern

LocalCart // USB

Universal Schedule and Booking LLC (USB)
USB is pioneering next-gen internet-based commerce and communication systems, winning R&D awards from federal agencies. This project is in a launch phase of growth.

About the Role

This internship is ideal for a motivated student who is passionate about marketing, communications, food systems, and community-based businesses. You’ll gain hands-on experience supporting two related initiatives:

  • LocalCart, a growing digital marketplace promoting shelf-stable food products made by independent producers, localcart.net.
  • A USDA-funded Farmers Market Promotion Program, focused on strengthening regional food access and market visibility through regional tourism, getawaylocal.com.

You’ll work at the intersection of storytelling, digital marketing, analytics, and community engagement, helping translate brand values into compelling content that drives awareness and participation.

In addition to digital storytelling, this role plays a meaningful part in external communications with current and prospective vendors. Interns will help shape how we present our platforms to food producers, makers, and partners; supporting outreach messaging, onboarding communications, and brand-aligned materials that explain value, process, and opportunity. This is a great fit for students interested in integrated marketing communications, brand voice, and audience-specific messaging, not just social media execution.

  • External communications and messaging for vendors, partners, and prospective collaborators
  • Translating complex offerings into clear, engaging value propositions for different audiences
  • Effective social media storytelling and campaign planning
  • Brand and communications strategy across multiple initiatives
  • Target audience identification and marketing personas
  • Using data and analytics to inform marketing decisions
  • Working directly with senior leadership in a startup setting

Responsibilities

  • Work approximately 10 – 20 hours per week in a virtual office environment
  • Support external communications with vendors and prospective vendors, including outreach language, onboarding materials, FAQs, and brand-aligned messaging
  • Collaborate on communications that explain platform benefits, participation requirements, and brand values to food producers and partners
  • Assist with messaging that resonates with target audiences, including local producers and consumers
  • Support social media content creation and scheduling across FMPP and LocalCart channels (primarily Instagram; others as needed)
  • Research and develop hashtag and content strategies using third-party analytics tools
  • Track and analyze engagement metrics; adjust content and posting strategies accordingly
  • Support additional marketing, communications, or research tasks as needed across projects

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals through academic, volunteer, or work experience
  • Strong interest in food, local businesses, sustainability, or community-based initiatives
  • Excellent writing and conversational communication skills
  • Comfortable using (or eager to learn) social media and analytics tools
