Position Summary and Objective
Coalfield Development Americorps Volunteer is a little over 11 month contract position that will work with our Reuse program Appalachian Reuse Hub. This position will have several key areas of work, all related to reuse systems development at various levels. A primary focus during the service time with Appalachian Reuse Hub will be around outreach and education, which will include running means of social media communication and the planning, development, coordination, and carrying out of our external reuse trainings. Trainings and workshops will be directed towards various groups including school aged children, businesses, artists, community leaders, folks in our communities with barriers to employment, etc . We have strong partnerships with several multi-statewide organizations and nonprofits that work with these groups and these will be critical relationships in delivering these training sessions. In addition to trainings it is expected that this position will work often with creative reuse initiatives, including workshops / events, and in our makerspace when it is made functional, activities will include collecting materials (like wood, plastic, textiles, craft supplies, etc) and upcycling those materials at stations for woodworking, sewing, plastic shredding / melting into molds, 3D printing, etc. This position will assist in overseeing equipment to make sure it is upkept and functional and will help teach and lead community members in utilizing the makerspace and equipment. Collection events may need planned and hosted as well in various places around the state / tri-state for hard to recycle materials such as; tires, electronics, books, and more. All of this work will be done under the supervision of the Senior Director of Agriculture with work plans subject to some change as new grants are awarded.

As an Americorps Member, you will:

  • Coordinate community outreach, trainings, and educational events around reuse, upcycling, recycling, and circular economy
  • Develop and organize volunteer plan
  • Coordinate volunteer groups
  • Market, promote, and recruit participants for trainings, education, volunteer, and outreach events
  • Assist with reuse work, working with deconstruction crew at times, crew chief, and Conservation Director
  • Detailed record-keeping, including participation and financial data
  • Professional handling of all correspondence related to outreach, trainings, and events
  • Note taking at meetings
  • Participation in team workshops and events, monthly team meetings, and weekly meetings with your supervisor to track your progress and explore opportunities for you to expand on your skills and experiences, as well as Coalfield Development Corporation personal development initiatives such as Coalfield Council Day.

This is a unique opportunity for those interested in contributing to the development of social enterprises and strengthening local circular economies.

This position does come with an education award of $6,495 granted at the completion of service. (This can be used to pay down existing debt, or for future educational expenses.)

Essential Functions

  • Ability to public speak, lead trainings, and teach reuse, recycling, and upcycling
  • Ability to work extended periods of time with hands either in the warehouse working with reclaimed wood orders, upcycling, at collection events
  • Be able to operate (with guidance and teaching first) 3D printing, plastic instruder / extruder, woodworking tools like saws, and hand held power tools such as drills and impact drivers
  • Able to work with and handle a variety of hand tools, including but not limited to knives, scissors, saws, and basic construction tools.
  • Perform routine document collection and submission
  • Communicate with supervisors and colleagues regularly via various communication platforms

Supervisory responsibilities

  • This position will not have supervisory requirements but may serve as a mentor and to trainees at times as designated by the Director.

Work Location and Hours of Work

  • 848 Camden Rd, Huntington, WV 25704 will be the primary reporting location on Tuesday-Thursday with Mondays and Fridays working from home except for when there is a Council Day, event or work needing to be done Monday or Friday, with Saturdays or Sundays being worked on occasion for events / trainings. Variable work hours throughout the week (30 to 40 hours) with most workdays being 8am to 5pm.

Environment Conditions, Physical Activity, Physical Demands

  • Be able to work in various weather conditions outdoors with high summer temperatures.
  • Some duties are performed in the warehouse and will require work to be done in varying climates.
  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Lift and move items and materials ranging in weight up to 50 lbs continuously to and from heights ranging from floor to overhead.

Travel and Transportation Requirements
Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.

Required Experience and Education

  • Proficient with computers, email, Google applications, and messaging apps.
  • Proficient with standard office equipment (phone system, copier/printer, scanners, etc.)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued by a state authority.
