West Virginia Farmers Market Association, Inc. (WVFMA), a tax-exempt organization under IRS code 501(c)(3), seeks an Executive Director. This leadership position will work to further our mission to strengthen the capacity of West Virginia farmers’ markets and positively impact the communities they serve by providing education, advocacy, and access to healthy, locally grown food.

WVFMA envisions a community where West Virginia farmers’ markets provide healthy, local food and economic opportunities for producers.

The Executive Director will be responsible for providing meaningful services and value for our member markets and their vendors; building the capacity of farmers’ markets through education, networking, and collaboration; promoting diverse partnerships, collaboration, and communication; providing growth opportunities and economic benefits for local food and farm-related business; and strive to improve food security and health outcomes in West Virginia.

Pursue Board member success. We seek an Executive Director who will work closely with the members of the Board of Directors. A successful Executive Director will build a well-rounded team, promote camaraderie within the industry, and develop open lines of communication.

Attract passionate teammates. Our organization is only as effective as those who work to make the mission possible. Our Executive Director will expect the team to execute plans precisely; to do so, they must proactively seek high-caliber talent. The Executive Director must go the extra mile to create a healthy work culture and communicate the mission.

Leadership and Management. We seek an Executive Director in pursuit of growth. Their passion is reflected in their desire to roll up their sleeves and do the difficult work to support farmers’ markets across the state. Honest, authentic leadership gains the trust and respect of those who come into contact. They can gain buy-in from the team and external stakeholders.

Understand the value of turning challenges into growth opportunities. Executive directors, whether freshly appointed or seasoned veterans, reflect on their strengths and shortcomings, empowering them to push themselves to improve with every opportunity.

Compensation: $46,500 – $60,000 annual salary

  • Salary dependent on experience and available funding
  • An annual increase may be available upon yearly review
  • Bonuses and other financial compensation are available
  • The position will be expected to obtain grant money to fund the annual salary for the role

Benefits:

  • Monthly stipend for healthcare expenses ($450)
  • Ten days paid leave (up to 80 hours)
  • Five days of bereavement (up to 40 hours)
  • Ten days of sick leave (up to 80 hours)
  • Six preferred holidays such as New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

Knowledge:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent industry experience

Additional Details:

This is a full-time salary hybrid position with a headquarters in Charleston, West Virginia, which includes travel to events and functions throughout the state. Travel costs may be reimbursed upon approval of the board of directors and in accordance with the WVFMA travel policies. All employees of the WVFMA are subject to the association’s bylaws, code of conduct, and public policy. Wages, bonuses, and promotions are contingent upon available funding and assessed performance overseen, reviewed, and approved by the board of directors.

The Executive Director position is classified as salary-exempt; therefore, exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and pays the same salary each pay period regardless of how many hours are worked.

  • Organizational Development and Oversight
    • Financial Oversight, Management, and Reporting

    • Oversees Member Services and Member Focused Programming
    • Lead strategic direction and goals for the organization

    • Bookkeeping
    • Record keeping

    • Monthly financial reports with accountant and treasurer
    • Grants and Budget Management
  • Communications Management
    • Maintains and oversees all media communication channels
    • Reviews all correspondence with members and partners
    • Liaison between staff and board of directors
  • Staff Management
    • Identifies ideal candidates to fill staffing needs
    • Conducts employee reviews annually and as needed
  • Recruits partners, funders, and sponsors
  • Oversight of Annual Census
  • Manages programs and member services
    • Conducts and oversees market and vendor assessments
