This position is assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management (DWWM) within the Permitting Section’s Groundwater and Underground Injection Control (UIC) Programs. Under administrative supervision, the position performs geological work providing a variety of services.
Duties include:
- Review deep well UIC permit applications, including geologic interpretations, reservoir modeling, well construction, drilling methods, mechanical integrity, financial; assurance documentation, and post-injection site care plans to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and protection of underground sources of drinking water (USDWs);
- Analyze data using modeling software for Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) and Industrial Disposal Wells (IDW);
- Assess Areas of Review (AoR) and interpret technical data such as geophysical and electronic logs (e.g., gamma, resistivity, porosity, sonic, pressure, and temperature logs);
- Prepare and maintain documentation, including certified files, technical reports, permits, and Response to Comment documents; recommend approval, revision, or denial of applications;
- Communicate and coordinate with applicants, permittees, agency personnel, and the public; respond to inquiries and participate in the public comment process;
- Attend public meetings and hearings and present before the Environmental Quality Board (EQB) and the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission as needed;
- Review groundwater monitoring plans, self-monitoring reports, inspection reports, and facility histories to ensure regulatory compliance;
- Conduct field inspections and evaluations of CCS and IDW sites, equipment, and operations; document findings and issue Notices of Violation when appropriate;
- Travel as required for site inspections, evaluations, and meetings;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Ideal employee would:
- Demonstrate advanced written and verbal communication skills;
- Work effectively with and communicate clearly to a broad range of applicants and members of the public;
- Apply knowledge and training in geological sciences to perform job duties;
- Have experience with geologic reservoir modeling software and/or oil and gas well operations.

- Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.

Minimum Qualifications
Training: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Geology.
Experience: None.
Select Certification-Areas of Assignment: Applicant must have completed six (6) semester hours or have one (1) year of
professional geologic experience in the area of specialization to be eligible.
Select certification may be requested in the following six (6) areas of specialization: (1) Coal Geology; (2) Environmental
Geology; (3) Hydrology, Water Resources Geology, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Geology; (4) Petroleum Geology; (5)
Land Reclamation and Soil Geology; (6) Structural Geology.
