A Journey Through Generation WV’s Programs - Sorelle Mbakop

Sorelle Mbakop’s path to employment in West Virginia is a powerful example of how meaningful connections and sustained engagement can lead to career success. Her journey with Generation WV began through a Career Connector Quick Chat, where she first connected with the Career Connector team and shared her interests, goals, and growing skill set.

Through that initial conversation, Sorelle continued to engage with our programs and was later screened as part of a Generational Talent Search. Although she didn’t receive that job, her strengths, motivation, and potential stood out, and she remained committed to developing her skills and exploring opportunities within the state.

Sorelle further strengthened her professional foundation as a member of NewForce Cohort 12, where she gained valuable technical training and career readiness experience. Her dedication and persistence throughout each stage of her journey ultimately led her to secure a role with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection as a Community Development Specialist.

Her story highlights the impact of a connected workforce ecosystem, where career exploration, skill development, and targeted recruitment efforts work together to support individuals in finding meaningful employment. From her first introduction through a Career Connector Quick Chat to her successful placement, Sorelle’s journey reflects both her determination and the value of sustained support along the way.

“Generation WV’s NewForce Program has helped me significantly hone my data analysis skills, and I now feel much more proficient in Excel and data visualization using pivot tables and graphics. I’ve also gained a thorough introduction to SQL in PostgreSQL, which has strengthened my ability to work with and analyze data efficiently. The skills and knowledge I continue to acquire through this program will allow me to bring an analytical, evidence-based, data-driven perspective to my future career.”

Sorelle’s success is a testament to what’s possible when talent is nurtured, supported, and connected to opportunity. Her journey not only represents a personal achievement but also reinforces Generation WV’s mission to build pathways that help individuals launch and grow their careers right here in West Virginia.
