Last week, leaders from across West Virginia gathered in Charleston for Pathways to Progress: Building Careers, Communities, and Opportunity in West Virginia, a statewide conference focused on the future of workforce development, economic opportunity, and community growth across the Mountain State.
Throughout the day, attendees engaged in conversations around talent retention, employer partnerships, broadband access, entrepreneurship, workforce training, and the evolving needs of West Virginia communities. While each session approached these topics from a different perspective, one message remained consistent: creating a stronger future for West Virginia requires collaboration across sectors, communities, and generations.
One of the most impactful conversations of the conference emerged during the “Staying Power” discussion session, which centered on a critical question facing the state: What does it actually take for people to build lasting lives in West Virginia?
Facilitators and participants explored the many interconnected factors that influence whether young people and families are able to stay and thrive here, including housing affordability and availability, childcare access, healthcare services, broadband connectivity, workforce re-entry pathways, upskilling opportunities, and community infrastructure.
The conversation reinforced an important reality: workforce retention cannot be separated from quality of life. Access to reliable childcare impacts whether parents can participate in the workforce. Broadband access shapes education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and remote work opportunities. Housing availability influences whether people can return to or remain in their hometowns. Strong communities are built not only through jobs, but through systems that allow people to feel supported, connected, and invested in the places they call home.
At the same time, the discussion highlighted the significant work already happening across West Virginia. Organizations, nonprofits, employers, educators, healthcare providers, and community leaders are actively building solutions and partnerships that support long-term opportunity across the state. From workforce development initiatives to digital inclusion programs and regional collaboration efforts, attendees shared examples of meaningful progress already underway in communities large and small.
Rather than focusing solely on challenges, the session emphasized momentum, collaboration, and the importance of continuing to work across sectors to address complex issues together.
Pathways to Progress was designed to be more than a traditional conference. It served as a space for honest conversation, relationship-building, and shared problem-solving among people committed to the future of West Virginia. The energy throughout the day reflected a deep belief that the state’s future depends on investing not only in careers and economic growth, but also in the communities and support systems that make staying possible.
Generation West Virginia is deeply grateful to every speaker, sponsor, partner, attendee, and volunteer who contributed to this year’s conference. Thank you for bringing your expertise, ideas, and dedication to these conversations.
The discussions started at Pathways to Progress will continue well beyond the conference itself, and we look forward to continuing this work together in the months ahead.
