Coalfield Development

Site Details: The Ashford farm uses sustainable, organic practices to grow lavender and raise bees on an active coal mine site. The harvested lavender and honey are used in high quality aromatherapy, body care and home goods products sold to retail and wholesale customers throughout the United States. The chosen crew chief will be required to complete two weeks of training at our Highwall site in Delbarton, WV. This training will provide context on best case practices for mine lands remediation and agricultural practices at Coalfield Development. 

Position Summary

Assistant Crew Chiefs will be responsible for the following:

  1. Assist Crew Chief in Supervision and Mentorship of WRAPS Trainees and 33-6-3 Crew Members and ensure they experience a combination of on-the-job training, professional certificate training and mentorship for 33 hours per week; work alongside to model good work ethic, mentor and coach while working, and identify opportunities for growth and learning.
  2. Assist Crew Chief in leading Personal Development using provided curriculum for an additional 3 hours/week. 
  3. Assist Crew Chief in executing work plans, training schedules, and/or events that has been communicated by Crew Chief, Human Development Team, and/or Director. 
  4. Assist Crew Chief in facilitating engagement in in-depth mentorship to help Trainees and Crew Members overcome specific barriers to long-term employment success.
  5. Lead Crew workplans, personal development, and training in Crew Chief’s absence. 

As an Assistant Crew Chief at Coalfield Development a typical day might include the following:

  • Support Crew Chief in Toolbox Talks with Trainees, Crew Members, and other crew personnel to cover safety topic debrief, prepare for the day’s activities, set the day’s goals and tools/supplies needed.
  • Execute the on-site work and training plan developed by Crew Chief.
  • Assist in transportation and logistics to move crew to various worksites or training locations.
  • Answer questions from community members about Coalfield Development and the work being done.
  • Communicate with vendors or partners regarding needs of work plans. 

Essential Functions

  • Regular attendance is an essential function for all employees. We depend on our employees to show up, begin work and end work at the time their schedule indicates and whenever scheduled to work, aside from extenuating circumstances.
  • Legally and safely drive a vehicle to work sites.   
  • Assist Crew Chief in providing constructive and timely performance management reviews and check-ins.  
  • Executes day to day function communicated by Crew Chief and/or Director on assigned mineland site; including apiary maintenance (bees), building or minor repairs as needed, staff support, and other essential duties related to regenerative agriculture and mineland remediation. 
  • Help maintains equipment in proper working condition; anticipates equipment needs for future projects.  
  • Reviews completed jobs and monitor projects in progress on site to assure accuracy and expediency.  
  • Monitors inventory levels of supplies and feed. Assists with ordering and maintains inventory of supplies.   
  • Maintains direct and close communication with Crew Chief.  
  • Teaches the skills necessary to do the work and maintenance of the farm to trainees and crew members under the direction of the Crew Chief.
  • Within the values, principles, and professional & personal development themes of Coalfield, Support the Crew Chief working with and mentor Trainees and Crew Members in a way that allows them to unlock their potential, power and purpose over 33/hours each week of on-the-job training, professional certificate training, and development of professional competencies.   Allowing up to 4 hours per week of individualized personal development work tailored to help Trainees overcome specific, identified barriers to long-term employment success.
  • Participate in 3 hours/week beyond the 33 hours of work in the personal development curriculum that will be  a combination of Personal Development Journal work, Financial Literacy, and “Week Three” activities, depending on the week.
  • Hold Trainees and Crew Members accountable for meeting expectations including attendance; uphold and administer policies and procedures; respond to organizational data collection efforts.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Technical Skills

  • Equipment Maintenance – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Equipment Selection – Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Installation – Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Operation and Control – Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Operation Monitoring – Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Operations Analysis – Analyzing needs and product requirements to create a design.
  • Programming – Writing computer programs for various purposes.
  • Quality Control Analysis – Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Repairing – Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Technology Design – Generating or adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
  • Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Experience preferred in drafting a growing plan for planting and harvest seasons.
  • Performing general labor outdoors and moving heavy loads
  • Operating heavy equipment that may have to be serviced in the field on short notice.
  • Adhering to USDA and FDA food handling regulations to ensure a food-safe product.
  • Interacting with suppliers and vendors to manage farm inventory and needed supplies.
  • Willing to learn permaculture methods and demonstrate its processes in day-to-day practices.
  • Plotting out and implementing efficient irrigation and natural fertilizer systems, tending growing crops and keeping farm buildings and equipment in serviceable condition

Resource Management Skills

  • Management of Material Resources – Obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
  • Management of Personnel Resources – Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work.

Supervision

This position reports to the Crew Chief/ Director of Reclamation and Remediation and works with limited daily supervision. The Assistant Crew Chief will support the Crew Chief with overseeing the activities of a crew of Trainees and Crew Members, and a technician if applicable.

Work Location, Hours of Work, and Working Conditions

The normal work week is Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, as well as some weekend availability as necessary. Working more than 40 hours per week is infrequently required when necessary to meet critical deadlines or respond to emergencies. The site for daily reporting will be the Ashford Farm  site in Boone County, as well as other sites proximate to Boone County as needed. The chosen candidate must have reliable transportation to regularly attend work at their assigned location and other locations, as required.

  • Car travel throughout the region will be common.
  • Access to a company owned vehicle may be required on a semi-permanent basis.

Site Infrastructure :

  • Farm infrastructure includes the apiary, a 130-ft high tunnel, tool and equipment storage containers, water tanks, and a small office.

Environment Conditions, Physical Activity, Physical Demands

  • Occasionally when visiting project sites: Low temperatures. High temperatures. Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. Noisy environments.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Moderate work that includes lifting objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Climbing, lifting, carrying, bending and twisting and operating heavy equipment and hand-tools.
  • Repetitive motions such as painting, sanding, pulling weeds, folding materials, packing boxes, etc. 

Travel and Transportation Requirements

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.

Required Experience and Education

  • High School Diploma or GED is required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Three plus years of experience in a job or jobs that require high levels of interaction, facilitation, coordination, management, and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with ecological restoration and agricultural techniques.
